Wow, who would have thought...

My little post on Leona Lewis has garnered a number of comments. Interesting. The latest is from someone who called themself "sexy mama" and I started to write a response in the comments, but it just got so long that I thought "Hey - this should just be a post. I don't post enough as it is." So thanks, sexy mama, because you've given me something to write about while I SHOULD be taking the opportunity to grab a nap. ;) This one's for you:

Hey sexy mama, thanks for your interesting comments. It's too bad you've completely put your own spin on mine, though. I'm not "threatened" by a good looking woman who can sing. Where on EARTH did you get that from? I'm a musician myself and I have many friends who are gorgeous and can sing the roof right off from over your head. A number of them could easily be in her place right now, and I'd be happy for them. So why does one person get a contract for $100 mil when there are so many out there who could have something equally as fantastic to contribute? How about record companies share the love a little? Stardom is not my goal, to be clear. This isn't a jealousy issue, it's just a cynicism with the music industry at large. And for the record (ar ar), I completely agree with you that paying people millions for sports is ridiculous. It's a different skill, yes, and there should be compensation for athletes if that's their profession of choice, but the amount of money that many of the athletes are paid is - again - ridiculous. That said, the consumer definitely helps drive that machine, you know what I'm saying? They wouldn't get paid that much if the customer wasn't providing the funds for them to get such lovely salaries. Really, the same thing goes in the music industry as well. All I was saying about Leona was that I had listened to clips of her music on amazon.ca and didn't understand the hype, or the justification for such a huge salary. For heaven's sake, she's barely out of the gates and hasn't established a brand or anything yet (and don't kid yourself, pro musicians who are signed with big labels ALL have brands). So obviously this brand is going to be formed FOR her - big bucks yes, but how happy will she be down the road?
Also, having made these comments, I have since followed the recommendation of a fellow blog buddy: I went to Leona's myspace page, where I was more impressed by what I heard. So yes, yay for Leona and her beauty and her lovely voice. But still...$100 million? I don't know. I think about artists like Jill Scott who blow me away much more than Leona Lewis has, and who don't seem to get the same amount of hype or attention, and I just think there's something seriously skewed in this industry when only the beautiful ones are rewarded because someone thinks they can sell product as well as beautiful music. And I feel sad for everyone out there who's equally as deserving of success in this field, and who have to struggle EVERY DAY to get whatever modicum of it they can, because someone at the top thinks there's only room enough for a select few "superstars". So really that post was more about "those fucking corporations" than anything else.

Some people just need to buy a life on Ebay. Seriously. Maybe Sexy Mama is really Leona Lewis in disguise! ;)

Her Tiger Woods analogy was ridiculous. He's one of the greatest ever. To make her point more effectively she should have chosen someone who rarely wins and still makes tons of money.

Besides, Tiger plays golf. That's a 100% individual sport. He makes all that money strictly off his talent and ability to win.

Whatever. That chick is pretty good and she's really beautiful but I'm not into her kind of music. So why would I buy it? Just like Mariah Carey. Super talent, but I hate her music. Jeeze people.

To Jay: You mean someone like Anna Kournikova? ;)

I totally agree. It has become too important with looks in the music industry. I'm not saying that all those hot babes don't have talent, because they do.

However, I do believe there are many out there with equal, if not more, talents who just aren't going to make the big bucks because they don't have a pretty face to go with it.

I agree with you Freaky. I watched LL on Oprah and AI and I thought she was lipsyncing. Good song, pretty girl, but lipsyncing? For $100 mil? Yikes.

I say freedom of speech/opinion/comments for all. Freakazojd questioned Leona. Sexy questioned Freakazojd. Freakazojd defended herself against Sexy. Easy kiddies! It's just empty meaningless blogspace where we all can put our irrelevant opinions out there. Sexy is probably a 14 year old guy who is stirrin' it up! Who cares if Leona makes a zillion? The tax man gets half. Go, governments, go! England is the true winner here, plus Leona ain't doin' half bad. Yes, she's hot. Yes,she has pipes. Some of us like her music and think she's worth every dime, others couldn't give a fart in the wind. Now I've got to go spend time with my kids....damn this blogspot world!

Wow. Just wow.

What I find amazing is that I had planned, even before reading this post, to type a comment that I went and purchased Miss Leona's CD on my birfday. I was all a twitter about it - don't get me wrong, I also got Mah-dohna's (as JTimberlake would say) CD as well. I heart Madonna! The reason for my trip to Best Buy.

Anyway, I think Leona is beautiful - drop dead stunning, in fact. She's got some fantastic pipes and, obviously, girlfriend CAN sing! Unfortunately, I too found that her vocals seemed underutilized (for lack of better word) on this CD. A "meh" moment was had by me as well. It was surprising and disappointing - to me. Not to say I didn't find a few songs to heart and hold, but I was "underwhelmed" overall. They didn't tap into Leona and give her some better stuff to strut. Which has nothing to do with her drop dead gorgeous looks or the fact that she still has a fantastic voice. The industry need to find music that makes her "SING" like no other.

I questioned the $100 Million too, but I can see the potential they should get. In the end, I believe she'll be worth it - I'm also sure they'll make it happen. That industry doesn't invest that much to see (or support) something to failure.

Stop being mean fellow bloggers. This is Freakazojd's palace - not yours.

Before I address anyone individually, I'd like you all to read Mary's comment here one more time with one added piece of knowledge: Mary = Sexy Mama. Too funny.

Tink, pretty crazy, eh? Even more funny that "Mary" a.k.a. "Sexy Mama" is trying to pass themselves off as 2 different people.

Jay, yeah, Woods is pretty crazy with those clubs. Not my favourite sport, but like you said, he's talented and has earned that money directly as a result of that talent. I still think the amount of money we as a society are willing to pay for sports/music is crazy. Granted a lot of it is cross-promotional sales, but I digress. What about the people "in real life" who perform necessary services? The police, teachers, firefighters...they get paid shit compared to the top people in sports/entertainment. Says a lot about our value systems as a society in general.

And REH, I can't let your Kournikova joke go unnoticed...that was funny shit, yo. :)

KTP, she was LIPSYNCING?! You're right, for that kind of money, that's crazy.

And last but not least, thank you, Jen - for your awesome comment and for sticking up for me. I heart you!! And it IS my palace, damn it! :)

I had no idea who you were talking about so I had to go to Myspace and look her up. Eh. She has some amazing eyes and her voice is good for the syle she is doing but it's not my thing. It will be remixed and played at clubs. People will like her cause she is hot. It doesn't have much to do with her mediocre voice. You are right about that. Same thing happened with most younger pop icons.

Okay, I went back and read the first post and comments. Sexymama/mary needs to calm down. The over all point here is that Leona is nowhere near at the skill level of her profession as Tiger Woods is in his profession. Okay, that wasn't the point at all but some people are so ridiculous.
