I've been hearing some hype about Leona Lewis. How could you not, right? Talk about a media driven machine. "Clive What's-His-Name" (just kidding, Davis) is reported to be potentially signing her for $100 million contract. Does anyone know if this is happening? (I ask, not necessarily needing an answer.)
So I finally took a few minutes to check her out on amazon.ca today. I listened to the first clip - and just shrugged...meh. Not one to pass judgement on the basis of one clip, I listened to a few more. Again and again, underwhelmed. The accompaniment/"beats" didn't do much for me, and while her voice was nice enough, she didn't sound much different from all of the other little pop queens/princesses out there; what I'm getting at here, is that vocally, she didn't stand out to me as being something special enough to warrant $100 million. So what's the draw? Besides the fact that she's fucking GORGEOUS, of course. Are looks REALLY all it takes to be a popular musician these days? And do I suddenly sound like I'm 60 years old?! Frikken frack.

I'm a music geek... was a band geek. Could not survive without music... I play piano, and listen to all different types.
How are ya! :)
I'm just waiting for Madonna's "Hard Candy" album to hit the shelves. . .
I've not heard of this Le Lewis gal? I tried to listen to her samples on the link you provided and my computer demanded that I was doing something illegal.
That was frackin' nice.
For good measure: Viggio is still awesomely hot!
She's no typical Britney, that's for certain. She sounds much better than the pop artists currently out there selling their junk. She has great vocals and a unique sound, plus she can actually write her own songs. She's pretty enough alright, but just looks super glam after the makeup artists have had their way with her!!
I've seen her videos and heard a couple of her songs and she's okay I guess. Of course, that's not really my kind of music anyway. I doubt I'll putting any of her songs on my iPod.
I've never heard of her. I feel ancient now, thanks! :)
I guess I am a selective music geek and this one was not on my radar screen at all. I hit her MySpace for a peek. She is beautiful. The song I listened to reminded me of Whitney Houston kind of, from back in the day. I'd say your opinion was pretty close to mine - and I'm a lot closer to 60 than you are!
Aunt Jackie, I knew you sang, but I didn't know you played piano too! So do I (to both). :)
Jen, that's so weird - maybe because it was the Canadian amazon? Try amazon.com and see if you still get the illegal warning. (Yay Viggo!)
Anonymous - please, post your name at least. It's a courtesy thing. As to your comment, I agree that she must have good vocals - she won a contest singing live, so obviously she's not just another technologically-enhanced singer. And I didn't know she wrote (co-wrote?) her own songs, but that's refreshing to hear. All I'm saying is that when I listened to her clips I was underwhelmed. I was expecting something exciting, fresh, different, and didn't hear that. Good singer, yes. What I'd expect to hear from a someone up for a $100 million contract, no.
Jay, yeah, same for me. Definitely not iPod material. We are so hip. So hip it hurts. ;)
RRL - haha, not to worry. I hadn't heard of her either until I read the article about the $100 million contract and then found some others/looked for her on amazon's website.
Gawilli, I'll have to head over there...I didn't even think to check her myspace page. Guess I'm not so hip after all, ha ha!
I listened today after our visit to the mall....yep, don't get it either!
Oh my god, THAT's why you're posting comments at almost 3 in the am! How did you get up for your showings today?! Haha!
La you tith.
xoxo
Fabulous!!! A fellow musician after my own heart... Ohh that is great!! :)
Anything I can listen to sometime??
I was up b/c I had a bout of insomnia....I looked at your blog and a few porn sites to pass away the time. tee hee xoxoxox
I've not heard of her. I feel so out of it now :P (maybe I can blame my shameful lack of pop culture knowledge on mental detox week?!)
Aunt Jackie, I did do a demo a few years back, but it was at the beginning of my education with the vocal jazz and now I hate it, haha. So...no, not right now. ;)
Atta girl, Sauce, haha! Can't wait to get more updates on Miss M's walking...it's going to be so fast. Today I had my first thought of "Oh my god, I hope I can keep up!" with Pengin. He is go-go-go ALL! THE! TIME!
Suze, absolutely due to the detox. You're pretty plugged in. :) It was like me with Paul Potts. Everybody was going on and on and I kept saying "WHO?!"
I really question the reason you feel Leona Lewis isn't worth the $ 100 mill signing contract, after all we pay much more for idiots like Tiger Woods to hit a little white ball into a teeny weeny hole. Yep I don't get that. DO YOU?!!! We as women should fucking celebrate the fact that a talented woman like Leona Lewis has finally made her mark alongside the millions of hot shot rappers who make millions selling music with lyrics degrading women. Yours isn't the first blog that I've read where the author appears to be threatened by a good looking woman who can sing. Why is that? it doesn't make any sense to me. Is it just attractive women who can sing you take issue with, or is it also gorgeous $200 million dollar baseball/basketball players?
Whoa, SM. *Sing song voice* Issues.
